AN ATMOSPHERE STEEPED IN MILLENNIAL-OLD CHARM AND CULTURE

Distance 6 km – The National Archaeological Park and Museum of Sibaritide, located along Ionian Highway 106, chronicles one of the most significant Magna Graecia cities. Here, archaeological findings have unearthed several structures designed by Hippodamus of Miletus, displaying his signature orthogonal pattern. Few details, however, are known about the earlier city, which had been destroyed before being rebuilt. The National Archaeological Museum of Sibaritide, located east of the archaeological area near the Ionian Sea, displays a multitude of findings from the protohistoric Magna Graecia era to Roman times, mainly tied to the cities of Sybaris, Thurii, and Copia, and their surroundings.

ADMIRE AN UNDERGROUND MOSAIC IN THE CAVES OF SANT’ANGELO

Distance 23 km The caves of Sant’Angelo are near the town of Cassano. This large complex of karst cavities is popular among speleology tourists. A visit to the enchanting interior reveals halls, tunnels, water pools, and spectacular carbonate concretions.

A VILLAGE CRADLING THE AUTHENTIC ESSENCE OF CALABRIA

Distance 23 km – Corigliano Calabro is a splendid town on a hill looking over the Sibari plain. Its historic centre is rich in valuable architectural and artistic evidence, starting with the majestic Corigliano Castle. Ancient dungeons are on the first floor, and the drawbridge leads to the mezzanine on the second floor. The Throne Room once occupied the third floor, nicknamed the Noble floor. Finally, the fourth floor was home to the Servants’ Hall. Other buildings of interest around Corigliano Calabro are Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Peter, and Saint Mary churches.

DISCOVERING CALABRIAN DELICACIES AND LIQUORICE

Distance 31 km – Set in the Sibari plain between Sila and the Ionian coast, Rossano’s beautiful churches are must-sees: the church and monastery of Santa Maria del Pàtire, Rossano Cathedral, San Bernardino Church, and the oratory of San Marco Evangelista. The city’s historic heart winds around Corso Garibaldi, the main street leading to squares and spaces where noble 18th- and 19th-century residences and sumptuous palaces stand with majesty. Keep an eye out for the 19th-century Clock Tower in the heart of Piazza Steri and the striking Mermaid Fountain. Rossano’s history intertwines with one of Calabria’s best-known products: liquorice. The Amarelli family established the first factory for processing the root in 1731. Today, the Liquorice Museum exhibits the centuries-old techniques used in its production.

SPIRITUALITY AND PANORAMAS AT THE SANCTUARY OF THE MADONNA DELLE ARMI

Distance 32 km – Situated atop a mountain complex at an altitude of 1,015 metres, the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Armi is an evocative destination–and not just for spiritual pilgrims. After entering the shrine, you can visit two large buildings: the Palazzo Ducale and the old pilgrims’ hospice. The Byzantine chapel is etched into the rock stretches for several metres and is home to the ancient statue of Our Lady of Constantinople. Descending toward the town, head to the church of San Pietro and the Grotta delle Ninfe, famous for its hot springs.

AN ANCIENT FORTRESS OVERLOOKING THE SEA

Distance 35 km – The castle of Roseto Capo Spulico stands majestically atop a rock, looking over the Ionian Sea from a strategic position on the Gulf of Taranto. The castle is a splendid work of 10th-century Templar-derived Frederician architecture. Mighty crenellated walls surround the large inner courtyard, which features an archway bearing the Rose and Lily coats of arms, emblems of Alchemical-Templar. Finish the day with a boat ride to admire the seabed beneath the clear emerald water.

THE AUTHENTIC ESSENCE OF CALABRIA

Distance 40 km – The beauty of Morano Calabro lies in the delicate combination of art and natural beauty. The stones of the arches, towers, buttresses, and houses all enhance each other. Recognized as one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, it magically blends right into its majestic mountain surroundings. The Morano Calabro municipality lies at the foot of the Pollino Massif, bordering the towns of Castrovillari, San Basile, Saracena, Mormanno, and Frascineto. The municipality’s countless beauties include the Castle suspended between the sky and mountains!

A VAST EXPANSE OF MOUNTAINS, FORESTS, AND WILDLIFE

Distance 72 km – Pollino National Park is Italy’s largest natural park, with views of the Dolcedorme and Cozzo del Pellegrino peaks and horizons retracting over the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas. Tree species include silver fir, beech, and black pine, while the rare Loricate Pine, the park’s most famous, grows on the higher slopes. The fauna is also of great naturalistic value and the park is home to the Apennine wolf and Orsomarso roe deer. The park authority organises day-long experiences for travellers, including hiking, mountain biking, rafting, trekking, and cycling.
